Temperatures in Khakassia hit 77 degrees Fahrenheit when the fires erupted. The region's average April temperature is just above freezing.

An estimated 1,850 military personnel and volunteers worked to extinguish the fires. Chinese media reports said the fires also spread into Inner Mongolia.
